Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara vs Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder – Which is better?
The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are like twin cars. They use the exact same hybrid engine system. This means they are both very, very good at saving fuel. Both cars have the same official mileage rating of 27.97 kmpl. On one full tank of 45 litres, they can go very far—about 1,200 kilometres.

Real-World Driving Mileage
The official number is 27.97 kmpl. But in real life, the mileage you get changes based on how and where you drive.
- City Driving (Very Good): In the city, with stop-and-go traffic, these hybrids are at their best. The car often runs only on the silent electric motor. Here, you can expect to get between 25 kmpl to 30 kmpl.
- Highway Driving (A Bit Lower): On the highway, when you drive at a steady high speed, the petrol engine works more. Because of this, the mileage goes down to around 21.97 kmpl.
- Important Note: If you want the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) version for rough roads, it does not come with this powerful hybrid system. The AWD model uses a different engine that gets less mileage, about 19.38–19.39 kmpl.
The Identical Engine and Parts Inside
The reason both cars get the same mileage is that the parts inside are exactly the same. Toyota and Maruti worked together to build this system.
- Engine: A 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine made specially for hybrids.
- Total Power: When the petrol engine and the electric motor work together, they make 115 bhp.
- Gearbox: They both use a special smooth automatic gearbox called an e-CVT.
Key Differences Between the Two Cars
Even though the engine and mileage are identical, Maruti and Toyota sell the cars a little differently.
- Which One is Easier to Buy on a Budget? Toyota makes it easier to buy a hybrid. You can get the hybrid engine even in their cheaper ‘S’ model trim. Maruti only puts the hybrid engine in their top, more expensive Zeta+ and Alpha+ models.
- Warranty: Toyota gives a better standard warranty. Their warranty is for 3 years or 100,000 km. Maruti’s standard warranty is 2 years or 40,000 km. But the important hybrid battery has a long warranty from both companies: 8 years or 160,000 km.
What Should You Choose?
It is simple. Both cars will give you the same great fuel efficiency. You will save a lot of money on petrol with either one.
Your choice depends on other things:
- Pick the Toyota Hybrid if you want a hybrid car at a lower starting price and like having a longer warranty.
- Pick the Maruti Grand Vitara Hybrid if you prefer Maruti’s style and their very big service network across India, even in small towns.
Both are excellent cars that will take you very far on very little fuel.
