BMW F 450 GS vs Royal Enfield Himalyan 450
The two very different adventure motorcycles. They both let you go on long rides and off-road trails, but they are built for different kinds of riders. The BMW is a premium, lightweight bike with a twin-cylinder engine. It focuses on performance and smoothness. The Himalayan 450 is a rugged, value-for-money single-cylinder tourer. It is built for versatility and heavy off-road use. One is expensive and refined, the other is affordable and tough.

The two bikes have very different engines. The BMW F 450 GS has a 420cc parallel-twin engine. This means it has two cylinders sitting next to each other. Twin-cylinder engines are smoother because the power pulses are smaller and more frequent. The BMW produces 48.67 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 has a 452cc single-cylinder engine, which is often called the Sherpa engine. A single-cylinder engine has only one cylinder, which gives strong low-end torque but can feel buzzy or vibrate at high speeds. The Himalayan produces 40 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 40 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. The BMW has more power, but the Himalayan produces its torque at a lower rpm, which is good for climbing hills and off-road crawling.
The weight difference between these two bikes is very big. The BMW F 450 GS weighs only 178 kilograms. This makes it the lightest bike in its class. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 weighs 196 kilograms, which is 18 kilograms heavier. That is a significant difference. The lighter BMW is much easier to handle in city traffic, when you are stopped at a red light, and when you are maneuvering through tight off-road sections. If you drop the bike on a trail, picking up 178 kg is easier than picking up 196 kg. The Himalayan feels heavier and more planted, which some riders like for stability, but the BMW is definitely more agile.
The fuel tank sizes are different. The BMW has a 14-litre fuel tank. The Royal Enfield has a larger 17-litre fuel tank. This means the Himalayan can go farther between fuel stops, which is useful for long-distance touring in remote areas where petrol pumps are few and far between. The BMW’s smaller tank is fine for most rides, but you will need to stop for fuel more often on very long trips.
The wheel sizes are also different. The BMW has a 19-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. The Royal Enfield has a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. A 21-inch front wheel is the gold standard for serious off-road riding. It rolls over rocks, ruts, and bumps more easily than a 19-inch wheel. The Himalayan’s 21-inch front wheel, combined with its 230 mm of ground clearance, makes it a better choice for technical off-road terrain. The BMW’s 19-inch front wheel is more street-biased, meaning it handles better on paved roads and corners, but it is not as good on very rough trails.
The seat heights are different. The BMW has a seat height of 845 mm. The Royal Enfield has an adjustable seat height of 825 mm, which can also be raised to 845 mm. The lower 825 mm setting on the Himalayan is easier for shorter riders to reach the ground. This gives you more confidence when you are stopped on uneven terrain. The BMW’s taller seat may be challenging for riders with shorter legs.
The BMW F 450 GS has more advanced technology. It offers an Easy Ride Clutch, or ERC, which is a centrifugal clutch system. This allows you to start moving without using the clutch lever at all. You just twist the throttle and the bike moves. This is very helpful in stop-and-go traffic because your left hand does not get tired. The BMW also offers Shift Assistant Pro, which allows you to change gears up and down without using the clutch. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 focuses on utility instead of high-tech gadgets. It has a 4-inch TFT display with integrated Google Maps navigation. You can see turn-by-turn directions right on the screen without needing to mount your phone.
Which bike should you choose? Choose the BMW F 450 GS if you want a lightweight, premium adventure bike that is easy to handle in the city and on highways. You should also choose it if you want a smooth twin-cylinder engine that does not vibrate at high speeds, if you want advanced features like the Easy Ride Clutch and quick shifter, and if you have a higher budget. The BMW is better for riders who do a mix of city commuting and highway touring, with occasional light off-road.
Choose the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 if you want a rugged, value-for-money adventure bike for serious off-road riding. You should also choose it if you prefer a 21-inch front wheel for better off-road capability, if you want a larger fuel tank for longer trips without stopping, if you prefer the lower seat height of 825 mm, and if you want a simpler, more utilitarian bike without expensive electronic gadgets. The Himalayan is better for riders who spend most of their time on rough roads and trails and who want a bike that is easy to fix and maintain across India.
