How safe is ADAS? A recent accident in China raises concerns about ADAS safety in cars.

Adas car sensors

What is ADAS : ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are electronic systems in vehicles designed to assist the driver in driving and parking functions. ADAS use sensors, cameras, and other technologies to provide safety features such as lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and parking assistance.

Recently, a video was shared on Twitter where the Li Auto L9 car was running at a speed of 70 km/h on a highway in China, and the car’s ADAS system was on.

There was a billboard advertisement on the road with two car photos. The car’s adas system got confused and detected them as real cars and did emergency braking on the highway.

The car was at a speed of 70 kmph and immediately came down to zero, causing the incoming car to hit it from the back. Luckily, no one was injured.

After this incident, questions are raised about the safety of ADAS systems, as they were mainly designed for driver safety only.
