BYD’s First Plug-In Hybrid SUV Coming to India on June 9

BYD India has officially released teasers confirming the upcoming launch of its first plug-in hybrid SUV on June 9, 2026. This marks a major strategic shift for the carmaker. BYD is expanding into combustion-assisted powertrains after operating as a pure electric vehicle brand locally. If you want a car that can run on electricity for daily commutes but also use petrol for long trips without worrying about charging, this new BYD could be perfect for you.

The upcoming vehicle features BYD’s globally acclaimed DM-i technology. DM-i stands for Dual Mode Intelligent. It is a Super Plug-in Hybrid EV system. Unlike traditional strong hybrids, the DM-i system prioritises electric motor propulsion. This means the car runs on electricity most of the time. The on-board petrol engine primarily functions as a generator to charge the battery. It only drives the wheels directly during high-speed highway cruising. This system delivers an electric-only city commute while ensuring long-distance travel via standard petrol refuelling. There is no range anxiety. You get the best of both worlds.

BYD has not finalized the specific model name yet. But automotive industry data highlights two distinct possibilities based on recent Indian road testing. The first and most likely candidate is the BYD Sealion 6 PHEV. This model was showcased initially at the Auto Expo 2025 to gauge public feedback. The Sealion 6 is a mid-size premium crossover. It comes in two variants. The front-wheel drive variant has a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The all-wheel drive variant has a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The FWD version produces 218 horsepower combined. The AWD version produces 344 horsepower. The pure electric driving range is up to 140 kilometres for the FWD and up to 128 kilometres for the AWD. The total combined range on a full tank and full battery is about 1,092 kilometres. That is huge.

The second possibility is the BYD Atto 2 DM-i. This is a compact, urban-focused SUV. It is slightly smaller and would act as a more budget-friendly entry tier. It combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with either a 7.8 kWh or an 18 kWh battery pack. The pure electric range is about 39 kilometres. The total combined range approaches 998 kilometres. This would be a smaller, more affordable option.

The introduction of a proper plug-in hybrid directly challenges premium mid-size segments. It gives buyers a bridge between standard combustion vehicles and fully battery-reliant setups. If you are not ready to go fully electric but want to reduce your fuel costs significantly, a plug-in hybrid is a great choice.

If you are thinking of buying this new BYD plug-in hybrid, you should wait for the June 9 launch to see which model is confirmed. You should consider the Sealion 6 if you want a mid-size premium crossover with very long range and powerful performance. You should consider the Atto 2 DM-i if you want a smaller, more affordable urban SUV. You should buy this car if you want to drive on electricity for your daily commute but have the freedom of petrol for long trips. You have access to home charging to take full advantage of the electric range.

You should consider a pure electric vehicle like the BYD Atto 3 if you have access to charging and never need to take very long trips. You should consider a traditional petrol SUV if you do not have access to charging at home. But if you want the best of both worlds, a plug-in hybrid is the ideal solution.
