Porsche to stop making ICE MACAN by mid 2026
Porsche has officially confirmed that it will stop making the internal combustion engine version of the Macan by mid-2026. The Macan is Porsche’s best-selling model, and this decision ends a very successful 12-year run for the petrol-powered SUV. The company is now moving fully to the new all-electric Macan platform. This means that after mid-2026, you will no longer be able to buy a new petrol Macan from the factory. The final petrol units are scheduled to roll off the assembly line in the summer of 2026.

While production ends in mid-2026, existing inventory is expected to last in showrooms through early 2027 in certain regions, including the United States and India. This means you may still find a petrol Macan at a dealership for a few months after production stops. However, once the inventory is sold, there will be no more new petrol Macans available. In the European Union, sales of the petrol Macan actually ended earlier in mid-2024. This was because the aging platform could not meet new cybersecurity regulations that came into effect.
The new 2026 Macan Electric will be the only “Macan” branded model moving forward. The electric Macan features high-speed 800V charging and offers up to 630 horsepower in the top Turbo trim. This means the electric version is much more powerful and charges faster than most other electric SUVs.
Because the demand for electric vehicles has cooled down and there is still high interest in petrol SUVs, Porsche is also fast-tracking a new combustion-powered model. This new SUV is codenamed M1 and is expected to debut in 2028. It will be distinct from the electric Macan, meaning it will be a different model. The M1 will likely use Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion architecture. This platform moves away from Porsche’s traditional rear-biased setup to a front-biased all-wheel-drive system, which helps reduce costs and speed up development. Unlike the current purely petrol Macan, the 2028 replacement is expected to feature both turbocharged petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains. So, you will still be able to buy a petrol Porsche SUV, just not one called the Macan.
If you are thinking of buying a final petrol Macan, you should do so as soon as possible if you want the last generation of the petrol-powered model. You should also consider it if you prefer a combustion engine over an electric one, or if you are not ready to switch to an electric SUV yet. However, you should buy it only if you can find one in inventory at a dealership before stocks run out, which may happen by early 2027.
You should consider waiting for the new electric Macan if you want a newer, more powerful, and more technologically advanced SUV, if you are ready to switch to an electric vehicle, or if you want the latest model with the Porsche badge. You should also consider waiting for the 2028 M1 SUV if you want a petrol or plug-in hybrid Porsche SUV but you can wait until 2028 for the new model to debut.
