Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel launched in India at Rs. 7.24 Lakh

On June 15, 2026, Maruti Suzuki officially announced the price of the Wagon R Flex Fuel. It costs ₹7.24 lakh ex-showroom. The company calls it the Wagon R BioFlex. This is a historic moment for India because it is the first time a mass-market passenger vehicle can run on flexible fuel. The car was first shown in its final production form on June 4, 2026. Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri were present at that event.

Let us look at the key specifications and features. The car is powered by Maruti’s 1.2-litre K12N four-cylinder petrol engine. It produces 91 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The engine is paired only with a 5-speed manual transmission. There is no automatic version offered at this time.

The special thing about this engine is its fuel compatibility. The BioFlex engine can run on ethanol-petrol blends from E20 all the way to E85. It has also been designed to support up to E100, which is pure ethanol. To handle the highly corrosive nature of ethanol, Maruti has made several hardware changes.

These include an ethanol sensor, revised fuel injectors, a new fuel pump, and upgraded fuel lines. So the car is specially built to handle ethanol without damage. The car is based on the top-spec ZXi+ trim. So it comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also gets 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Hill Hold Assist. So safety and features are well covered.

Now, here is the major “catch”. The Wagon R BioFlex is currently available only for commercial and fleet buyers. That means only those with yellow registration plates can buy it. Private buyers cannot purchase this variant at this stage. So if you are a regular family looking to buy one, you will have to wait. The price is also a concern. At ₹7.24 lakh, it costs roughly ₹86,000 more than the standard private-passenger Wagon R ZXi+ manual variant.

It is also ₹1.35 lakh to ₹2.25 lakh more expensive than the standard commercial Wagon R Tour H3. So you are paying a significant premium for the flex-fuel technology. There is also an infrastructure problem. Wider usability of flex-fuel depends heavily on the government’s infrastructure rollout. Right now, E100 dispensing outlets are limited to select locations in the Delhi-NCR region and the Mumbai-Nagpur corridor. The government has a national target of 5,000 outlets by the end of 2027. So for now, finding ethanol fuel will be difficult in most parts of the country.
