New Plug-in hybrid Mercedes-Benz S-Class Launched at 2.20 Crore

Mercedes-Benz has launched the 2026 S-Class facelift in India. This is the first time the flagship sedan gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain in our country. The car comes as a completely built unit, or CBU, which means it is fully imported. It is available in two versions, both of which are hybrids. Prices start at ₹2.20 crore ex-showroom.

Let us first look at the pricing and variants. There are two main versions. The S 450e Launch Edition Exclusive Line costs ₹2.20 crore. This version has elegant styling with traditional luxury highlights. The S 450e Manufaktur Edition AMG Line costs ₹2.38 crore. This version gets aggressive AMG body kits and special interior options. So you pay more for a sportier look and more customization. Bookings are open right now at all Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Customer deliveries will start around Diwali, which is in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Now let us talk about the electrified powertrain and performance. The S 450e uses a 3.0-litre M256 Evo inline-six turbo-petrol engine. It is combined with a rear-mounted electric motor. Together, they produce a total of 435 hp and 680 Nm of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The car has a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This gives it a pure-electric driving range of up to 115 km on a single charge. That is enough for most daily city commutes. The car also supports fast charging. If you use a 60 kW DC fast charger, the battery goes from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. The car is also very efficient. It claims a fuel economy of 32.33 km/l. Despite being a hybrid, it is quite quick. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. So it combines sports-car performance with excellent fuel efficiency.

Next, let us look at the cosmetic and technology overhaul. Mercedes says that over 2,700 individual components have been newly developed or revised for this facelift. That is more than half the car. On the outside, it has a larger front grille with chrome three-pointed star elements. The grille surround is illuminated. The tail lamps are also revised. Inside, the dashboard gets the latest MB.OS digital architecture. This brings deep AI integration and Google Maps directly on the augmented reality head-up display. Rear passengers get dual 13.1-inch entertainment screens that support streaming. There is a 31-speaker Burmester 4D sound system. The car also has up to 15 airbags, which is the highest number ever offered on an S-Class in India. The chassis is also very advanced. It comes with standard AIRMATIC air suspension and E-Active Body Control. Rear-wheel steering is also standard, which makes this long car easy to park and turn in tight spaces.

Finally, let us talk about the market strategy. This is an interesting move by Mercedes. They are temporarily discontinuing standard pure-petrol and pure-diesel S-Class models. So for now, the only S-Class you can buy in India is this plug-in hybrid. The standard combustion versions will return next year once local assembly begins.
