Ather Energy, known for its premium electric scooters like the 450 series and the family-focused Rizta, is now getting ready to launch its most affordable scooter yet – the Ather EL01. This scooter has been spotted testing on public roads in Bengaluru, and it is built on an all-new, cost-effective platform called “EL”.

The EL01 is designed to be a practical, family-oriented scooter that is easier on the wallet. It will be Ather’s entry-level model, positioned below the popular Rizta. The test mule stayed very close to the concept model that Ather had shown off earlier, meaning the production version will look very similar. The design is quite clean and modern. Up front, the headlight is mounted on the handlebars, and there is a wide LED daytime running light that stretches across the front panel.

One of the most noticeable changes is the wheel setup. The EL01 features a larger 14-inch front wheel, which is a first for any Ather scooter. A larger front wheel helps provide better stability and a smoother ride, especially over the rough roads and potholes we have in India. The rear wheel is smaller, at 12 inches. The scooter will have a telescopic fork at the front and a single shock absorber at the rear.

Underneath, the EL01 is built on Ather’s new EL platform. This platform is designed from the ground up to be more affordable and simpler to manufacture. The biggest change is that it uses a steel unibody frame instead of the aluminium frame used on the 450 series and Rizta. This switch to steel helps keep costs down without making the scooter too heavy. Ather expects the weight to be quite similar to the Rizta, which is around 119 kg. The new platform also has a longer wheelbase, which will make the scooter feel more stable and comfortable.

The scooter will be powered by a swingarm-mounted motor, a departure from the belt-drive system used on other Ather models. This setup is not only simpler but also reduces noise. The new EL platform is very flexible and can support a range of battery packs, from 2 kWh to 5 kWh. For the EL01, Ather is expected to offer battery options in the 2 kWh to 4 kWh range. With this, the scooter is expected to offer a real-world range of approximately 100–120 km on a single charge, with a top speed of around 70-80 km/h .

Even though it is a budget model, the EL01 is likely to retain a 7-inch TFT touchscreen display. This means it will come with Ather’s signature smart features like navigation, ride modes, and smartphone connectivity. It will also introduce some new tech. One of the major highlights is the inclusion of an “integrated onboard charger.” This means you won’t need to carry a bulky external charger. The charging unit is built into the scooter itself, so you only need a simple charging cable, which makes daily charging much more convenient. Ather calls this the Charge Drive Controller. For safety, it might also get an Advanced Electronic Braking System (AEBS), which is an advanced braking system that uses the electric motor to help slow the scooter down, along with the regular brakes .

The Ather EL01 is expected to launch in India in the second half of 2026, most likely around the festive season (October to December) or potentially as early as June or August. It has been listed on some websites with an estimated starting price of around ₹99,000 (ex-showroom) . Once launched, it will directly compete with other affordable electric scooters like the Bajaj Chetak, the TVS iQube, and the Ola S1 X, making it an exciting option for anyone looking for a smart, reliable, and value-for-money electric scooter .
