Hyundai Small EV spied testing, Tata Nexon EV Rival in coming

Hyundai is working on a new, small electric SUV to take on popular cars like the Tata Nexon EV. This new model is codenamed **HE1i**. It has been spotted testing on Indian roads, often parked next to the Nexon EV to compare sizes. The test cars were seen in different places like Mumbai and Goa, showing that Hyundai is doing serious testing.

Launch Timeline and Positioning

The new Hyundai electric SUV is expected to launch around **Diwali 2026** or early 2027. It will be a **sub-4-meter** SUV, which means it will be compact and easy to drive in the city. In Hyundai’s lineup, this new EV will sit below the Hyundai Creta EV, making it a more affordable electric option from the brand.

Design and Key Features

The design of the HE1i will be unique. It will have a **tall, boxy shape** that looks rugged and modern. It will also get special lighting, with pixel-style LED daytime running lights (DRLs) inspired by the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The test mules were seen with **flush-fitting door handles** and **roof rails**, making it look very stylish.

The interior will be packed with technology. It is expected to have a **dual 10.25-inch screen setup** for the driver display and infotainment. It will also get a **360-degree camera**, a **panoramic sunroof**, and ventilated seats for comfort.

Platform and Powertrain

Hyundai will build this SUV on a modified version of its global E-GMP platform, designed especially for India and called the **E-GMP (K) platform**. This is the same platform that underpins the Hyundai Inster sold in other countries.

To keep the price competitive, Hyundai will use **locally sourced LFP batteries from Exide**. The SUV will likely be offered with **two battery options**, similar to the Inster:

*   **Standard Range**: A 42 kWh battery pack.

*   **Long Range**: A 49 kWh battery pack.

Hyundai will make this new electric SUV at its factory in **Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu**. It is being designed and engineered specifically for India, but Hyundai might also export it to other countries.
