BYD Seagull – A Small, Affordable Electric Hatchback Coming to India

The BYD Seagull is a small, 5-door compact electric hatchback. It is marketed globally under different names. In Latin America, it is called the Dolphin Mini. In Europe and South Africa, it is called the Dolphin Surf. In Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand, it is called the Atto 1. In China, where it is made, it is called the Seagull. This car has become very popular around the world because it is affordable, practical, and well-built. BYD has already trademarked the Seagull name in India. The car is expected to launch by late 2026. The estimated starting price is ₹10 lakh, ex-showroom. If you want a small, affordable electric car from a global brand, the Seagull is worth waiting for.

The Seagull is built on BYD’s dedicated e-Platform 3.0. It uses BYD’s signature Blade Battery. This is a lithium iron phosphate battery that is very safe and long-lasting. There are two battery options. The smaller 30.08 kWh battery gives a claimed range of up to 305 kilometres on the CLTC cycle. The larger 38.88 kWh battery gives a claimed range of up to 405 kilometres. For reference, CLTC stands for China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. In real-world driving, the range will be slightly lower. The car supports DC fast charging. It can charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. The smaller battery version has a 55 kW motor, which is about 74 horsepower. The larger battery version has a 100 PS motor, which is about 75 kW. The top speed is 130 km/h.

The Seagull is very compact. It is 3,780 mm long, 1,715 mm wide, and 1,540 mm tall. The wheelbase is 2,500 mm. This is 66 percent of the car’s length. This gives a lot of legroom for passengers. The Seagull has 5 doors and seats 4 people. In some markets, a 5-seater version is also available. The cabin is surprisingly spacious because the wheels are pushed to the far corners of the body.

The interior is modern and tech-heavy. It has a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system. This screen can physically rotate between portrait and landscape mode. It also has a 5-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver. There is a wireless smartphone charging pad. The 2026 global refresh has introduced an optional LiDAR-based “God’s Eye” intelligent driving system. LiDAR is a laser-based sensor that helps with autonomous driving. This brings premium Level-2 ADAS features down to a budget vehicle class. The car is built with 61 percent high-strength steel. It comes with 6 airbags as standard. It also has rear disc brakes, electronic stability control, and a reverse parking camera system.

The Seagull is expected to launch in India between October and November 2026. The estimated starting price is ₹10 lakh, ex-showroom. It will directly compete with the Tata Tiago EV, the MG Comet EV, and the Citroen eC3.

If you are thinking of buying the BYD Seagull, you should do so if you want a small, affordable electric hatchback from a trusted global brand. You want the safety of the Blade Battery and 6 airbags. You want a modern interior with a rotating touchscreen. You have a budget of around ₹10 to ₹12 lakh. You have a daily driving range of less than 300 kilometres. You have access to home or office charging. You can wait until late 2026 for the launch.

You should consider the Tata Tiago EV if you want a locally made electric hatchback with a longer range. You should consider the MG Comet EV if you want an even smaller car for very tight city parking. You should consider the Citroen eC3 if you want a more spacious cabin and a softer suspension. However, if you want a global electric car with advanced features like a rotating screen and optional LiDAR, the Seagull is a very strong contender.
