BYD Seal U Plug-In Hybrid SUV Testing in India: 1,000+ km Range Challenger

While the Indian market has largely debated pure petrol versus pure electric powertrains, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) offer the best of both worlds. Global EV giant BYD has begun testing its highly acclaimed BYD Seal U DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) midsize SUV on Indian highways, evaluating its real-world performance under local climate and road conditions.

How Does the Seal U Super DM-i Hybrid Work?

1. True Zero-Emission City Commuting

Unlike standard mild or strong hybrids that only drive a couple of kilometres on electricity, the Seal U packs an 18.3 kWh Blade Battery pack. This allows it to cover 70 to 80 km in pure electric mode, meaning everyday city office commutes require zero petrol.

2. Over 1,000 km Combined Road Trip Range

For cross-country highway driving, a high-efficiency 1.5-litre petrol engine kicks in seamlessly:

  • The petrol engine acts primarily as a high-output onboard generator, but can directly drive the wheels at sustained high speeds.
  • Total combined driving range exceeds 1,080 km on a single tank and charge.
  • Fuel consumption is rated at a remarkable 22–25 km/l even when the battery is depleted.

3. Full Executive Luxury Packaging

  • Rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen running BYD DiLink 5.0 with 4G connectivity.
  • Panoramic sunroof, crystal gear selector, and dual wireless smartphone charging docks.
  • Comprehensive Level 2 ADAS safety with adaptive cruise, lane centring, and 360-degree transparent chassis cameras.
