BMW iX5 facelift spied testing
BMW is putting the finishing touches on its first-ever all-electric X5, called the **iX5**. Heavily camouflaged prototypes have been spotted doing high-speed test runs at the famous Nürburgring race track. This is not just a simple update. It is a completely new, fifth-generation model that will go on sale before the petrol and diesel versions arrive.
Let us first talk about the battery and platform technology. This new luxury SUV will be a game-changer for BMW. It will carry the **largest battery pack ever fitted to a BMW**. Depending on the market, it will have a massive capacity of **141 kWh to 144 kWh**. To give you an idea, that is much bigger than the battery in the current BMW iX or iX3. The iX5 will also use BMW’s new sixth-generation eDrive technology and an advanced **800-volt electrical system**. This 800V system is important because it allows for much faster charging, similar to what you see in cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The new X5 platform will eventually offer five different powertrains: battery-electric (iX5), hydrogen fuel-cell, petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid.
Next, let us look at the design. The heavy camouflage hides the exact details, but some clear changes are visible. BMW is moving away from the large “beaver-tooth” grilles. The new iX5 has a sleeker front end with smaller kidney grilles and slim headlights. The overall design takes inspiration from the **Vision Neue Klasse X concept car**. This means boxier proportions, distinctive daytime running lights, and flush door handles that sit flat against the body. The traditional split tailgate is also expected to be dropped.
Now, what about performance? The standard model, called the **iX5 60 xDrive**, will have two motors (one on each axle) and produce about **578 hp**. But there is also a high-performance version being tested. This is likely to be called the **iX5 M70** and could produce over **700 hp** from its multi-motor setup. The test mules have been seen with massive **23-inch lightweight alloy wheels**, cross-drilled performance brake rotors, and unreleased high-performance Michelin tyres. This suggests it will be incredibly fast and handle like a sports car despite being a large SUV.
The all-electric iX5 is expected to have its global premiere by **early 2027**. The petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid versions will follow in 2028. It will be built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, USA.
The BMW iX5 is a landmark vehicle for the brand. It will have a record-breaking large battery, an 800V system for fast charging, and a choice of powerful electric motors. Its design will be inspired by the Neue Klasse concept cars. The iX5 will lead the new generation of the X5, with other powertrains to follow.
