The INEOS Grenadier Trialmaster X and the Land Rover Defender 110 P400 are both serious off-road SUVs. They are built for people who need to go anywhere, on any terrain. The Grenadier Trialmaster X was announced and launched on May 14, 2026. The Land Rover Defender is already on sale and is the main rival to the Grenadier.

The INEOS Grenadier Trialmaster X is a heavy-duty off-road SUV. It is built on a body-on-frame chassis. This is the traditional, very strong construction method for serious off-road vehicles. It uses a BMW 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-6 engine. This engine produces 282 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The drivetrain is permanent four-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case. This gives very low gearing for crawling over rocks.

The Land Rover Defender 110 P400 also uses a 3.0-litre straight-6 engine. But it is a mild-hybrid, not a twin-turbo. It produces much more power at 394 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. It also has an 8-speed automatic and a 2-speed transfer case. The Defender has more power, but the Grenadier is built tougher.

The off-road features are where the Grenadier really shines. The Trialmaster X comes with front and rear locking differentials as standard. It also comes with BFGoodrich KO3 all-terrain tyres as standard. These are very aggressive and durable tyres. It has a raised air intake as standard, which allows it to wade through deep water. It even comes with a 5.5-ton integrated front winch. All these features are included in the base price. A regular Trialmaster with these options would cost about $2,700 more.

The Land Rover Defender has a more advanced electronic system. It has centre and rear locking differentials, but they are optional, not standard. It has a configurable Terrain Response 2 system. This system adjusts the car’s settings for different terrains like mud, sand, rocks, and snow. It is very clever, but it relies on electronics. The Grenadier relies on mechanical strength and simplicity.

The interior of the Grenadier is also upgraded for the Trialmaster X. It has Recaro heated leather seats, a premium sound system, carpet floor mats, Safari windows, privacy glass, a lockable spare wheel storage box, and a tow ball with a 7-tonne gross train weight. The price is $85,995.

The Land Rover Defender has a more luxurious interior. It has premium Windsor leather, an 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system, air suspension, advanced off-road cameras, and a panoramic roof. The price is between  86,100 and 86,100 and 93,000, depending on configuration.

If you are trying to decide between these two off-road SUVs, you should choose the INEOS Grenadier Trialmaster X if you are a hardcore overlander or off-road purist. You want the most capable factory-built vehicle without needing any aftermarket modifications. You prefer mechanical simplicity and strength over electronic gadgets. You value features like standard front and rear lockers, raised air intake, and a winch. You are willing to accept less on-road comfort and lower power.

You should choose the Land Rover Defender 110 P400 if you want a luxury SUV that also has serious off-road capability. You want more power and more on-road comfort. You prefer modern technology and a premium interior. You need air suspension for a smoother ride. You are willing to pay extra for optional off-road features.
