Tata Sierra CNG Spotted, could launch by 2027

Tata is expanding the Sierra SUV lineup with two new variants: a factory-fitted CNG version and an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) version. Test mules of these new models have been spotted with emission testing equipment and exhaust pipe cutouts, confirming they are being tested. While the all-electric Sierra EV debuts first on June 30, 2026, these petrol-based versions are expected to arrive in early 2027.

CNG Variant: Practical and Efficient

The Sierra CNG will likely use Tata’s **twin-cylinder iCNG technology**, which places two 30-litre CNG tanks flat under the boot floor. This is a clever setup because it keeps the boot space usable, unlike traditional single-tank systems that take up most of the luggage area. The spare wheel will be mounted under the vehicle to save even more space.

Under the bonnet, it is expected to use the **1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine**, which produces about 106 bhp and 145 Nm of torque in petrol mode. The CNG version will have a slightly lower power output, roughly 95 bhp. A key rumour is that Tata might offer this CNG variant with a **7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT)**, which would make it the first automatic CNG SUV in its class. This is a big deal because it offers the fuel savings of CNG with the convenience of an automatic gearbox.

AWD Variant: For Better Grip

The Sierra AWD is being developed for buyers who want better traction and mild off-road capability. This variant is expected to be paired with a more powerful **1.5-litre turbocharged Hyperion engine** (which produces 160 bhp) and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Why This Matters?

The current Sierra range is only front-wheel drive (FWD). The addition of AWD will make it a stronger rival to the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder, which offer AWD options. The CNG variant will target buyers looking for lower running costs without sacrificing premium SUV styling. Both variants are part of Tata’s strategy to make the Sierra a family of vehicles on its flexible ARGOS platform, capable of accommodating multiple powertrains.
