The Jaecoo J5 EV will use a LFP battery, which is known for being safe and long-lasting. The battery size will be either 58.9 kWh or 60.9 kWh. The claimed range is 402 km under the WLTP test, or up to 461 km under the NEDC test. In real-world driving, you can expect around 350 to 400 km, which is good for daily driving and weekend trips.

The car has a front-mounted electric motor that sends power to the front wheels. The motor produces about 208 to 211 horsepower and 288 Nm of torque. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in about 7.3 to 7.7 seconds, which is quite fast for an SUV in this price range. The car supports DC fast charging at up to 130 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes.

The Jaecoo J5 is a mid-size SUV that is slightly larger than the Hyundai Creta. It measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. The boot space is 480 litres, which is big enough for family luggage, and there is also a small 35-litre frunk (front trunk) for storing charging cables.

The design of the Jaecoo J5 looks very premium. Many people say it looks like a baby Land Rover. It has a boxy, tough appearance with slim LED headlamps, a closed-off grille, and 18-inch or 19-inch aero-optimised wheels. The car looks expensive and modern and will stand out on the road.

The inside of the car is very modern and tech-heavy with a clean, minimalist layout. There is a massive 13.2-inch or 14.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital driver display. The sound system is an 8-speaker Sony unit. You get 50W wireless phone charging, which is very fast, and a large panoramic sunroof. The front seats are both ventilated (cooling) and heated (warming). A unique feature is the pet-friendly interior, which uses durable, easy-to-clean synthetic leather. If you have a dog or cat, the seats are made of material that does not trap pet hair or mud.

For safety, the Jaecoo J5 comes with 6 to 7 airbags, Level 2 ADAS (smart safety tech), and a 540-degree camera system that includes a transparent chassis view. The 540-degree camera shows you the view around the car and also the view underneath the car, which helps you see rocks or potholes that you cannot normally see.

In other countries, the Jaecoo J5 also comes with a petrol-hybrid version. That model has a 1.5-litre turbo engine and produces 221 horsepower. But in India, JSW Motors will only sell the fully electric version.

The Jaecoo J5 EV will compete with the Hyundai Creta EV, which costs between ₹18 and ₹25 lakh, the Tata Curvv EV, which costs between ₹17 and ₹22 lakh, and the Mahindra BE 6, which costs between ₹19 and ₹23 lakh. The Jaecoo J5 is expected to be priced very competitively, possibly slightly cheaper than the Creta EV to attract buyers.

If you are thinking of waiting for this car, you should do so if you want a stylish electric SUV that looks like a baby Land Rover, if you need good range of over 400 km, if you want modern features like a big touchscreen, Sony sound, and ventilated seats, if you have a pet and want easy-to-clean seats, and if your budget is around ₹15 to ₹20 lakh. However, you can wait only if you are okay with the car launching in early 2027.

You should buy a rival EV now if you need a car immediately, if you prefer a proven brand like Hyundai, Tata, or Mahindra, if you want longer range (the Creta EV has up to 510 km), or if you want a car with a larger service network since JSW is a new brand in India.
